When judging the quality of coffee flavours there are three things you should look for and these are: acidity, aroma and body. It is important to ensure these things are right especially if you are one of the people that drink black coffee without sugar and looking for a distinctive taste. Every country around the world offers their own signature coffee beans which are determined by such elements as climate etc. Coffee beans can be grown in Australia, Africa, Indonesia, America and more.
When tasting coffee, acidity is the first bite that you get from the coffee; if you taste bitterness this is not due to acidity levels, this is because the coffee is stale; aroma is the smell that you get when you first open a bag of coffee beans and as you make the coffee the smell will continue to intensify; body is the taste sensation you feel when drinking the coffee. Different beans from around the world have their own distinctive taste and character. Depending on where grown in the world, coffee can have a different strength, taste and smell.
People are warned that when buying expensive coffee beans, ensure you are getting what you paid for, as some suppliers for expensive beans are running at a shortage; an example of this is Jamaica Blue or Kona, so when they say blend, you may be getting a few quality beans and the rest are cheap beans. It is important to read the label first and see what the percentage bean blend is.
Coffee beans that are of a high quality can be very pricey and this is due the work that is put into growing them, picking them and shipping them out. The coffee market is very volatile and can fluctuate at any time. Coffee that is sold in local supermarkets that is cheaper is a mixed blend of beans, general arabica coffee and robusta coffee, this makes it not have the great taste more expensive coffee has and you really won't be able to taste the full flavours.
As you continue to drink coffee, you too will slowly learn characters of different coffees and what good quality is and what isn't.
